Spring Cleaning: An Annual Tradition for New Beginnings

Happy New Year and Spring Equinox! For many, this isn’t a new year, but for others, it is a time of celebration because the first day of spring has approached!

Two New Year’s? Spring Equinox? Let’s Talk About It!

Within spirituality and many traditions across the globe, specific dates, times, and events will announce the arrival of spring and the beginning of the seasonal new year. Some practices honor the astrological new year and deem the first day of the Aries season as the beginning of the new year, while others wait for the spring equinox and allow it to take its course to lead us into the following year. Sometimes the selected date is the samebut it varies depending on the year.

Starting usually between March 19-21st, the spring equinox is a day of renewal and revitalization. It is the beginning of spring and the start of a prosperous and fertile season. Many farmers, gardeners, and other naturalists mark this special day because it is the best time to start new gardens and plan for the incoming year. After a period of coldness, retreat, and death, it is now a time for balance, renewal, and rebirth. Plant those seeds, literally and figuratively so you reap what you sow through the year!

In seasonal matters, January 1st is not the new year because it is the middle of winter! Winter is a time for hibernation, reflection, and closure. In certain practices and cultures, one does not resonate with this time because of how the environment feels, which is typically very cold, staunch, and slow. Spring is a time of refreshing, warm, new energy. It melts all the snow, defrosts lakes and rivers, and begins to nourish the soil to prepare for an abundant spring, summer, and fall.

Keep in mind, you don’t have to celebrate both of these dates, but it is a wonderful fact to keep in mind. Maybe you missed the traditional January 1st “New Year” and want to try again? The spring equinox is your best bet.

Spring Cleaning: What is it?

Everyone has heard about the seasonal term “Spring Cleaning,” but what does it mean in spiritual terms?

Spring cleaning is a thorough cleaning and purification of a home for spiritual and mundane purposes. Many will do a deep cleaning to free up space and welcome blessings to come in as time goes by. Some will burn old petitions, spell remnants, or go to the beach for a spiritual cleansing for a fresh new start. Others will wash their clothes, donate old items, etc. to release them from dirty, stagnant, and old energy. All in all, this is a time for releasing all that stuff that brought you comfort during cold times to open you up and feel the warmth of freedom and happiness that spring has in store. Many practitioners like to undergo a road opening ritual after such cleansings for setting new goals and attracting new opportunities.
